F – Ran out under the arc deep of the guns. Started and extended hunt both right and left of the guns – hunted deep and then worked her way back to the bird.

F – He angled across the terrace behind the guns – established a hunt to the right of the guns and went deep to the trees and then back to the fall area and got his bird.

F –  Out under the arc deep but in front of the guns – tight hunt and he got his bird!

F – Under the arc – a tight hunt in the area and he got it.

F – Out under the arc, established a tight hunt behind the guns – expanded to a bigger hunt out to the left and then to the bird.

Ice Cube and Caleb came to the line at 8:28 am

F – Under the arc he made tight circles  – then went out behind the little trees and deep of the guns and over to his bird.

Rip and Alvin came to the line at 8:25 am

F – Came in under the arc to the small trees just deep of the guns – made several loops deep, then expanded the hunt deep and wide right. Came back to the fall area and got his bird.

Lollie and Paul came to the line at 8:22 am

F – Straight to the fall area – put on the brakes –  a quick turn left and then she scooped up her bird!

F – Out under the arc and deep – established a hunt under the arc. Worked it out to the area and got his bird.

F – Straight to the fall area and he got a little deep, quickly corrected and was straight on to the bird!

Chief and Glennon came to the line at 8:14 am

F – Out under the arc a little deep of the guns. Stayed in front of the guns and hunted the area and he got his bird!

F – Straight to the bird! Pinned it!

9. Carolina’s Top Shelf, “Bobo,” BLM, Matt Neal

Bobo and Matt came to the line at 8:07 am

F – Out deep of the gunners. Hunted right and left for a bit, made a few tight circles to the left of the gunners and then circled the gunners. He then went back to hunting to the right and up and down the terraces – he circled the guns one last time and found his bird!

Kai and Marcy came to the line at 8:00 am

F – He came out in front of the guns, hunted deep and then wide right down the terraces. He hunted the wrong side of the guns, but then came back to the fall area, hunted left and right and he got it!

6. Mind The Gap, “Kew,” BLF, Joey Smith

Kew and Joey came to the line at 7:57 am

F – Out across the field and up the terraces, under the arc, she hunted deep and then went wide right to expand her hunt to cover a larger area left and right - and she found it!

First Test Dog up for the 1st Series was Stinker with handler Claudia Rosasco

Stinker and Claudia came to the line at 7:35 am.

Flyer –  She went out to the guns, made a few circles around the gunners and then worked her way out to the bird.

This test took Stinker a little less than 2 minutes to complete 

Retrieving Freedom Presentation  –  7:37 am

John Drach, Director of Operations with Retrieving Freedom was up next to give a brief presentation to all of the handlers and gallery about their program that is headquartered in Iowa and here in Sedalia, MO. Bob Hayden has this location on his property.

Good morning from the 2023 Derby National! The skies are clear and it is 45 degrees – perfect weather for working AND watching the dogs! For the 1st Series, we are in the Terrace Field. The mat is facing south east and there is little wind. 

This single is a rooster pheasant flyer shot right to left. The gunners are sitting approximately 259 yards from the line. The line to this bird takes the dogs over a road and across a steep side hill. There is a small bunch of trees deep and under the arc of the flyer, which some dogs have been drawn to.

The test is taking approx 2 min per dog.

Welcome to the first day at the National Derby!

This morning at 7:15 am we started off with the National Anthem by Mariah Van Leer.

Russ gave us directions as to where to go – Getting a photo is a must!

Instructions were given: No-bird, go back 5, 2nd No-bird, go to the end. 

1st test dog is running at 7:30 am. Then there will be a brief Retrieving Freedom presentation.

Then the 2nd test dog will run.

Call To Order
3:07 pm – meeting called to order by Rita Jones, 2023 President of National Derby Club

Rita introduced the board:

• 1st Vice President – Bob West
• 2nd Vice President – Russ Hardy
• PRTA Director – Paul Sletten 
• Secretary/Treasurer – Steve Roegiers 

Rita welcomed all contestants and volunteers, and thanked our generous landowners.
Secretary/Treasurer Steve Roegiers came to the podium.

• Steve stated that the NDRC sent out 159 membership notifications and received responses from 137-member clubs (up 10 from last year)
• 61 clubs gave the quorum.
• In addition to membership statement, Steve announced that Dave Kress was elected SE Region Director, following Rita Jones.
• Rita motioned to accept minutes as read, Dave seconded. All in favor.

Financial Summary

• 2022 event revenue: $33,923 with 62 entries
• Approx. Expenses $30,000
• Cash Balance $58,180
• Total assets $75,000

Rita motioned to approve financials; Russ Hardy seconded. All approved.

Dave Kress came to podium

• Dave announced that Terri Curtis is the 2024 chairman.
• The trial is dedicated to Bob and Barbara Hayden. They have been incredibly generous by donating their property for the National Derby. The Hayden’s came to Sedalia in the 1980’s. In the 1990’s, after catching the retriever bug, he realized that there were no local training or trialing properties and set out to make the retriever paradise that is Wood Dale Farm. 
• Dave presented Barbara Hayden with a bouquet of flowers.

Bob West came to the podium to talk about next year’s event ...

• Bob wished everyone good luck and then introduced Terri Curtis – who has agreed to be the 2024 event chairman. 
• The 2024 event will return to Wood Dale Farm in Week 41, October 7-11, 2024

Judges are Set to Be:

• Bill Barstow – Western Region
• Chris Van Eimeren – NE Region
• Bubba Joiner – SE Region

Dave Kress invited Rick Stawski and Sylvia Lewelling up to the stage – Trainer and Owner of 2022 NDC Fineline’s Out Of This World and presented them with a beautiful painting of Bruno.

• Dave then welcomed Gwen Jones to the podium to recognize the sponsors of the 2023 event – Purina, Starline Brass, Avery, Kent Ammunition, Garmin.
• Dave presented gifts to the sponsors
• Dave then thanked all property owners, those hosting the event and those opening their facility for pre-National training.
• Our AKC rep in attendance this week is Jerry Mann. 
• Dave then welcomed and thanked the Retriever News, our event photographer, and announcers.
• Thomspon Hill is our official event veterinarian.
• Dave then introduced the 2023 Derby Judges – Dave Furin, Alan Madsen and Randy Whittaker and presented them with plenty of swag and a NRDC plaque.

Rita thanked event chairman Dave Kress for the work he has done in the past year. She then presents Dave Kress with a sterling silver logo mounted on a solid marble base.

Rita then invited Wayne Curtis up to the podium

Wayne took the time to congratulate all the contestants and spoke to the quality of the upcoming tests. Introduces our test dogs:

• Jacked Up, “Pup Pup” – Handled by Phil Heye 
• Oakpoint’s Miss Behavin, “Stinker” – Handled by Claudia Rosasco

• National Anthem 7:15 am, Test Dogs run at 7:30 am, first running dog at 8:00 am. 
• There will be a brief presentation by Retrieving Freedom in between 2 test dogs
• NW Gate, along Tanglenook – there will be plenty of signage
• 1st test is a Single, Rooster Pheasant Flyer
• We intent to run two tests each day

Wayne reminds us that:

• Controlled breaks are allowed at this level, and advises handlers to address breaking and keep running the test!
• Callbacks will be at the test site and/or on the blog
• Gun change on the 1st test, 26 dogs into the test
• Gun change and thrower change 26 dogs into the test

The 1st running dog for series one will be dog #6 is first – Joey Smith.
2nd series starts with #20, 3rd with 34 and 4th test with #48.
5th test starts with the 6th running dog still in contention after dog #6.
