9th Series – Land Double with Rooster Pheasants
20 Dog Teams were called back to run this Series
After the second version of this test was ready to go late morning, Test Dogs began the Series at 11:31 am, beginning with "Stinker" and then next up was "Pup Pup" giving the dog teams a nice preview of this 9th Series test.The first running dog kicked off the 9th Series test at 11:45 am with #37 High Mileage Hone A Fancy Saber, “Edge,” BLF handled by Paul Young.
The weather early this afternoon was 65 degrees, overcast with occasional light rain and a 13 mph SW wind.
This was a smooth Series with not much to report on here! Here is how things turned out for the 9th Series…

Our last running dog for this series was dog #35 Dealers Choice VIII, “Rip,” BLM with handler Bill Goldstein. The test was completed this afternoon at 12:59 pm.
Our last running dog for this series was dog #35 Dealers Choice VIII, “Rip,” BLM with handler Bill Goldstein. The test was completed this afternoon at 12:59 pm.
There were 20 dogs sent from the line in this series, taking exactly 1 hour and 14 minutes, which averages out to be just under 4 minutes per dog running time.
The 9th Series is officially completed and in the books! We are waiting for callbacks and then will be moving into the 10th Series next!

LB – Out across the road to the guns – left and scooped it up on the road
RB – Down the field to the guns and went right, looped behind and he got it!

Hazel and Cary came to the line at 12:51 pm
LB – Straight out to the right side of the guns for a few turns wide right away from the bird – crossed back across the road and got her bird.
RB – Out right of the guns to the tree line and back left to her bird!

LB – Left of the rocks and across the road for a short distance, then angled back across and to his bird.
RB – Angled down the hill for a few loops deep and right of the guns and then up to his bird.

LB – Left of the rock, crossed the road towards the guns and under the arc, turned left and crossed the road and he got it!
RB – Down the field to the guns, right turn down the hill and back up in front of the guns, then out to the left to find his bird.

LB – Left of the rock, crossed the road, out to the guns and just passed them and stopped and turned left straight to his bird.
RB – Took a left line out across the field for a perfect line and mark!

Kew and Joey came to the line at 12:22 pm
LB – Left of the rocks, across the road toward the arc and then left across the road again to her bird.
RB – Between the rocks across the hillside towards the guns, started to cut back uphill at the cedars before veering right of the guns for a few deep loops and then up to find her bid.

Groot and Bill came to the line at 12:18 pm
LB – Left of the rock, across the road toward the arc and then right back across the road to his bird.
RB – Between the rocks going right of the cedars near the guns, after a few loops right and deep, he made his way left to find his bird.

Rookie and Rick came to the line at 12:14 pm
LB – Out just deep of the guns under the arc, crossed back left across the road and to the bird.
RB – Great line out, almost stepped on it! A quick stop only a few feet from his bird and he got it!

Test Description – 9th Series
Test 9 is Land Double with Rooster Pheasants
We are in the Dam Field on Bob’s Hill for the 9th series of the National Derby Championship!
It is 65 degrees, overcast with occasional light rain and a 13 mph SW wind.
Test 9 is a land double with Rooster Pheasants. The mat faces north, overlooking a field of rolling hills that slope to the right.
Bird #1 is a dead Rooster Pheasant. It is thrown from Right to Left, 253 yards from the line. The line to this bird takes the dogs between two large rocks and down a steep hill where they are briefly out of sight. The bird is thrown tight to 2 trees. We will call this bird LB for Left Bird.
Bird #2 is a dead Rooster Pheasant. It is thrown across the road, from Right to Left, 167 yards from the line. We will call this bird RB for Right Bird.
This test takes approximately 3 minutes per dog.
**Test 9 Announcement**
Test 9 has been scrapped. We are moving to a new field, and we will restart Series 9. All dogs will run the new test 9 again, after test dogs. Stay Tuned ...

Ziggy and Scott came to the line at 10:06 am
LB – Out across the hill on a left angle, into the tree line, up the draw to the right and out deep of the guns, back for a hunt along the draw at the tree line – all over the fall area but could not come up with it...kept hunting and worked it out by staying tight in the fall area
RR – Nice line towards the brush, kept right – kept running deep up the hill and hunted at the top of the hill... dog was picked up.
Pick-up 18. Our Daily Interest, “Vig,” BLM, John Russell (test scrapped)

Vig and John came to the line at 9:58 am
LB – Up the field towards the fall area and missed it – tight turn and he got it!
RR – Through the dip up hill left of the brush, kept driving up the hill – wide left and out of view, saw him at the top of the hill wide left and then lost sight again over the hill. Dog was picked up.

First test dog to the line for the start of the 9th Series this morning was Pup Pup with handler Phil Heye .... Pup Pup came to the line at 9:33 am
LB – Angled down the hill across and up under the arc, looped left, then back to right, made a few more loops deep and then back again, into cover at the tree line and found his bird.
RR – Lined out through the valley and crossed the road to the right of the holding blind. A couple of loops and then back across the road to his bird.

The next test dog to the line for the 9th Series this morning was Stinker with handler Claudia Rosasco ... Stinker came to the line at 9:39 am.
LB – Angled down the hill across the valley, under the arc and made a few loops in the fall area, then into the cover at the tree line and she found her bid.
RR – Down the hill and across the valley, up left of the brush pile, and carried that line deep for several loops before working back to the bird.

We’re back for series 9 of the 2023 National Derby Championship!
We remain in Grader field, where the running mat has shifted about 20 yards to the right, facing North. It’s 63 degrees, overcast with occasional light rain. The wind is blowing at 15 mph at the handler’s back.
Test 9 is a Land Double with Hen Pheasants
Bird #1 is a dead Hen Pheasant, thrown from Right to Left, 230 yards from the mat. The gunners sit on the right side of the road and throw their bird across the road where it lands behind a large brush pile. The gunners retire when the dog is sent for Bird #2. We will call this bird RR for Right Retired.
Bird #2 is a dead Hen Pheasant, thrown from Right to Left, 235 yards from the mat. The gunners sit near the top of the rolling valley and throw their bird down the hill where it lands in a shallow ditch tight to the tree line. We will call this bird LB for Left Bird.
This test takes approximately 6 minutes per dog.

After the test was ready to go this morning, Test Dogs began the Series at 7:38 am, beginning with "Stinker" and then next up was "Pup Pup" giving the dog teams a nice preview of the 8th test this morning.The first running dog kicked off the 8th Series test at 7:59 am. It was #50 Heartbeat's Heaven Scent Tommy Girl, “Tommy,” BLF handled by Julie Kobach.
The weather this morning was cloudy and drizzly with a temp of 60 degrees, and a light wind at 13 mph.
This was a quick Series! Here is how things turned out for the 8th Series…
