Entry Questionnaire
Owner Name: Paul and Susan Young
Dog Full Name: High Mileage Hone A Fancy Saber
When did you begin competing in Field Trials?
I (Paul) ran my first trial, a derby, in 1996 with my dog Canterbury's Daisy May.
What made you decide to compete in Field Trials?
I was encouraged by my mentor and friend, Pete Plourde. I had been running Hunt Tests, and Field Trials looked like a bigger challenge, while still being fun.
Who are your training partners at home?
When you're an amateur training your own dog, it takes a village! My wife Susan is invaluable to me, offering fair constructive criticism and encouragement as our journey unfolds, and for all her help and intuition during force fetch and collar conditioning during early basics. We train with Ann and Ellis Ibbotson, Dave Graf, Mimi Kearney, Mitch Gilbert, Mike Moscowitz and Jim Smith in the summer. Augie Farnsworth, George Amenabar, Tom O'Brien, Joyce Carrelli and Judy Harris in the winter. We wouldn't be here without all of their support!
What is the origin of your dog’s name?
High Mileage Prairie Society (Fancy) is her dam. Tealcreek Patton's Saber (Saber) is her sire. I hope to sharpen this fancy saber to a fine edge. So, her call name is Edge.
Tell us an interesting story or fact about your dog.
She is very playful at home. So much so that she has even been known to hurl plush toys at me as we travel in our RV! I hope she always has a little bit of that in her, even as an old dog!
You and your dog have made it through nine series of the National Derby Championship. You are about to come to the line for the 10th series with a chance to win the 2023 National Derby Champion. What song and artist would you want to hear playing as the two of you come to the line?
"Every Breath You Take" by The Police
Edge and Paul came to the line at 8:08 am
Down the hill and into the pond, swam across the water, up the hill and straight to the cover and her bird!
